The Grief Recovery Method FAQ

What is The Grief Recovery Method® program?

It’s a once-a-week face-to-face meeting that gives you the tools, space, and support to work through and release the pain of a major life loss. The program lasts five to nine weeks, depending on the type and size of your program (Grief Recovery, Pet Loss, or Helping Children with Loss; one-on-one or group size). One-on-ones usually last five to seven weeks and group programs usually last five to nine weeks.

What's the difference between one-on-one and group programs?

In a one-on-one program, you’ll work directly with me. You’ll hear my story and get direct support from me throughout.

In a group program, you’ll work with me as well as others. You’ll hear my story as well as the stories of others and get support from the group through the later weeks of the program.

What losses are okay to work on?

All losses are welcome! Death, divorce, and diagnosis are the most common, but there are over 43 losses that can cause grief. The Pet Loss program is specific to an animal: dog, cat, bird, horse, fish, iguana, etc. and can be either death, rehoming, or lost; recent or in the past. Helping Children with Loss is designed for caregivers-- parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, daycare workers, educators, social workers, etc.

What can I expect from our time together?

During each 90 minute session, you’ll be welcomed into a confidential, non-judgmental space where you’ll be expected to share the truth of your story as it happened to you. You’ll also be expected to complete weekly reading and homework assignments.
From me, you can expect open ears and an open heart ready to receive your story. I’m also available to answer logistical questions about the program.

Do I have to attend every session?

Yes. If you miss a one-on-one session, you’ll be asked to reschedule your session with the possibility of incurring a fee. If you miss a group session after the first two weeks, you’ll be asked to leave the program with the opportunity to finish with another group at another time.

What should I bring?

A notebook and something to write with. Books and worksheets will be provided for you.

How is The Grief Recovery Method® different from therapy?

The Grief Recovery Method® is a series of steps specifically designed to help you recover from major loss within a set time frame. Unlike traditional therapy, The Grief Recovery Method® comes with a pre-established framework, a distinct focus on grief, and a limited number of meetings.
