Helping women decide what deserves their time, energy, money, and care when life hasn't gone according to plan.
Financial Hotwash
Something changed financially. Now you need to know what it changed.
A job ended. A relationship changed. An expense appeared. Income dropped. Debt increased. A financial decision didn't turn out as expected. Or your circumstances simply aren't what they used to be.
Financial Hotwash is a structured way to look at what happened, what changed because of it, and what may still be affecting the financial choices you're making now.
This isn't about endlessly revisiting the past.
It's about determining what belongs to what happened, what is true now, and what needs your attention next.
The past may explain where you are. It doesn't have to make your next decision.
A Financial Hotwash may be useful if...
-
Your financial circumstances changed and you haven't fully sorted out what changed with them.
-
You're making decisions based on rules or assumptions that made sense before, but may not fit now.
-
A past financial choice is affecting how willing you are to make decisions today.
-
You find yourself avoiding, delaying, or repeatedly revisiting financial actions you know need attention.
-
You're not sure which parts of your current situation are facts and which are carryovers from what happened.
-
You want to understand the effects of a financial change without spending months examining the past.
You don't need to resolve everything that happened. You need to know what is still affecting what you do now.
More than the numbers may have changed.
A significant financial change can alter much more than income, expenses, savings, or assets. It can change what you expected your future to look like.
What you thought you could provide for your children. Where you expected to live. When you thought you could retire. How independent you expected to be. What you believed your work meant. How safe you felt. Even how you understood yourself.
Some of those losses appear on a financial statement.
Others don't.
Financial Hotwash gives you a structured way to examine the whole change: what happened, what didn't happen, what it meant, what you are still carrying, and what is actually true now.
Because you can't fully account for a financial change by counting only the money.
What We'll Work Through
Financial Hotwash moves from the change itself toward the life that exists now.
What changed
We'll establish the before and after—not only financially, but practically, relationally, socially, and personally.
What didn't happen
We'll account for the future you expected but didn't get: plans, security, opportunities, experiences, roles, or possibilities that were part of what you thought your life would be.
What money came to mean
We'll examine the connections between money and things such as competence, security, independence, success, providing, belonging, and worth.
What you're still carrying
Regret, anger, shame, blame, guilt, resentment, or the things you believe you should have known or done differently may still be part of the financial change.
Which money rules still fit
We'll examine assumptions about earning, spending, saving, dependence, work, retirement, deserving, and responsibility—and whether they still correspond to your life and reality.
The life that exists now
We'll look at the resources, constraints, responsibilities, losses, and possibilities that are actually present—not the life that was or the one that was supposed to be.
What you carry forward
You'll bring the pieces together into an account of the change: what happened, what it cost you, what remains, and what you want to carry with you.
What needs attention next
In a private integration session, we'll determine what, if anything, now needs your attention—information, a financial decision, professional financial or legal help, further personal work, or something else.
Inside Financial Hotwash
Financial Hotwash is an eight-week guided experience for working through a significant financial change.
Week 1 — What Changed?
Establish the before-and-after. What actually changed financially, relationally, practically, socially, and internally? Separate the financial event from everything the event altered. The purpose isn't detailed financial assessment—but recognizing the whole change.
Week 2 — What Didn't Happen?
We identify and examine the secondary losses. Financial change often includes losses that aren't transactions: the retirement that was supposed to happen, the house she expected to keep, travel, security, inheritance, generosity toward children, independence, the identity attached to earning or providing. The loss of an anticipated future is real even though that future never technically existed.
Week 3 — Money, Identity, and Worth
What did money mean before the change? Competence? Safety? Status? Freedom? Being a good mother? Being cared for? Being successful? Financial circumstances can change faster than identity adjusts. This week separates net worth from human worth without resorting to affirmations.
Week 4 — What Am I Still Carrying?
Regret, resentment, shame, blame, guilt, anger, humiliation, “I should have known,” “I wasted twenty years,” “I should have saved more,” “I let this happen.” The question becomes: What from the old financial life is still governing the present one?
Week 5 — Whose Money Rules Am I Living By?
Family messages, marriage roles, gender expectations, class expectations, religious messages, scarcity rules, ideas about deserving, saving, spending, dependence, work and retirement. Not “money mindset” in the usual manifestation sense. More rigorous:Which inherited assumptions still correspond to reality, and which don't?
Week 6 — Living in the Life That Exists Now
Not acceptance as approval or resignation. Reality recognition. What resources, constraints, responsibilities and possibilities actually exist now? What must be relinquished? What remains? What has become possible that wasn't possible before?
Week 7 — Carrying the Past Without Letting It Run the Future
Integration. What have you learned? What deserves remembering? What do you no longer need to organize your life around? What do you want your relationship with money and financial decision-making to become? You leave with a concise personal account of the change:This is what happened. This is what it cost me. This is what remains. This is what I carry forward.
Week 8 — Private Integration Session
We'll meet one-on-one to bring the work together and identify what, if anything, needs your attention next.
By the end, you'll have a concise account of your financial change:
What happened. What it cost you. What remains. What you carry forward.
You may also identify a practical next step—such as gathering financial information, making a decision, seeking financial or legal expertise, doing further personal work, or simply beginning to live from what you now know.
-
Your financial life changed in a significant way, and you're still making sense of everything the change affected.
-
The future you expected financially no longer looks possible—or looks very different than you imagined.
-
Your financial circumstances changed faster than your sense of yourself did.
-
Regret, anger, shame, resentment, or “I should have known” are still attached to what happened.
-
You suspect some of the rules you've lived by about money, work, security, dependence, or responsibility may no longer fit your life.
-
You know what happened financially but haven't had a way to account for everything else that changed with it.
-
You're ready to understand what belongs to the past and what actually needs your attention now.
You don't have to erase what happened to stop organizing your life around it.
